Big Chop Reset

Why I finally did it (again)

I’m not even going to pretend this was my “first time being brave.” I’ve big chopped more than once, and if I’m being honest, it usually started with the same thought: “If my curls looked more manageable, I’d feel more put together.” 🙃

This time, I didn’t want to keep dragging along straight, damaged ends while telling myself I was “transitioning.” I wanted my real texture back, fully. Not the half-and-half version where one side is trying to curl and the other side is just… tired.

So yeah. I cut it. And I’m writing this for the version of me who stared at the mirror afterward thinking, “Wait… do I look cute or do I look like I made a mistake?” 😭💔

First thing: only big chop when you’re ready

I know people say “hair is just hair,” but that phrase has never comforted me. Hair can be identity, culture, confidence, creativity, and sometimes the only thing I feel like I can control when life is doing the most.

So I’m not going to romanticize it like it’s easy. If you’re considering a big chop, I genuinely believe you should do it when you feel ready—not when social media makes it look like a cute little “snip snip” moment.

Being ready doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you’re choosing the fresh start anyway.

The “new look” adjustment period is real

One thing nobody can fully prepare you for is how unfamiliar you might feel at first. The first week after my cut, I kept catching my reflection like, “Oh… that’s me.”

It’s not even always regret. Sometimes it’s just your brain catching up. You’re used to hiding behind length, buns, slick backs, or “I’ll just straighten it.” With a TWA (teeny weeny afro) or a pixie-level chop, your face is the main character. Your cheekbones, your eyes, your neck, your expressions—everything feels louder.

So if you’re in that stage right now, please hear me: give yourself grace. You’re not “doing it wrong.” You’re just getting used to yourself again.

Short hair can be elegant, classy, and loud in the best way

I used to think short natural hair only looked “right” on certain people. Then I did it and realized the truth: short hair doesn’t need permission. It can be soft, feminine, edgy, polished, playful—whatever you decide.

There’s something about a big chop that makes me stand taller. Not every day, but more days than before. And when it hits? It really hits. Like “curly girl swag” energy, even when I’m just in a hoodie and lip balm.

Stop obsessing over curl typing (it will steal your joy)

This is a big one. After a chop, it’s so tempting to zoom in on every coil and start spiraling:

“Is this 3C? 4A? Why is this section looser? Why is that part tighter? Why does my crown look different?”

But here’s what I’ve learned: the more I obsessed over curl typing, the more I treated my hair like a problem to solve instead of something to learn.

Texture can vary across your head. Shrinkage is real. Humidity is real. Product buildup is real. And sometimes your hair just wants to be different in different places. That doesn’t mean it’s unhealthy or “wrong.”

What helped me most was focusing on what actually matters for a big chop journey: moisture, gentle handling, and consistency.

Confidence is the real “style”

I’ve had days where my hair was perfectly defined and I still felt insecure. And I’ve had days where my curls were doing their own thing and I felt unstoppable.

The difference wasn’t the hair. It was my mindset.

When I big chopped, I realized something kind of uncomfortable: I wasn’t only attached to my hair—I was attached to what I thought my hair did for my self-esteem.

So I started practicing confidence like it was part of my routine. Not fake confidence. More like: “I’m allowed to be in a growing stage. I’m allowed to be learning. I’m allowed to show up anyway.”

“No more damaged hair” is a whole lifestyle shift

For me, the chop wasn’t just about length. It was about ending the cycle of neglect.

Because sometimes life happens, and your hair tells the story. I’ve been the person who knew what to do, advocated for healthy hair, and still stopped doing it. No routines. No treatments. Just vibes and stress.

The big chop was my reset button. Bittersweet, but necessary.

And if that’s you—if you’re cutting because you’re tired of seeing damage win—please don’t shame yourself. Just start where you are.

My simple big chop routine (nothing complicated)

I’m keeping this realistic because I’ve learned that complicated routines are the first thing I abandon when I’m busy.

1) Clean scalp, always
When my hair is short, buildup shows up fast. A clean scalp makes styling easier and helps my hair actually feel soft instead of coated.

2) Moisture + seal
Short hair still needs moisture. I focus on hydrating first, then sealing it in so my curls don’t feel dry by lunchtime.

3) Gentle detangling (yes, even short hair)
People act like you can’t tangle with a TWA, but you can. I use my fingers first and take my time. Rushing is how breakage happens.

4) Low manipulation most days
The more I constantly redo it, the more stressed my hair gets. I try to style and leave it alone when possible.

Styling a big chop: the “is it cute?!” phase

Styling short natural hair can feel like a daily experiment. One day it’s giving “model off duty,” the next day it’s giving “I slept on one side and now we all have to deal with it.” 😭

Here are a few styling ideas that helped me feel like I had options:

Defined curls
Great when I want that glossy, intentional look. It also helps me see my curl pattern without overanalyzing it.

Soft afro / fluffed out
This is my favorite when I want volume and confidence. It’s also forgiving if definition doesn’t last.

Side part moment
A simple part can change the whole vibe. Sometimes I don’t need a new style—I just need a new angle.

Accessories and statement details
When the hair is short, little details feel bigger. It’s an easy way to switch it up without manipulating your curls too much.

If you’re in the “idk y’all is it cute?” stage, please know that stage passes. You start learning what your hair likes, what your face likes, and what makes you feel like you.

Have fun with it (TWA seasons don’t last long)

This is the part I wish I took more seriously earlier: have fun.

TWA stages can be quick compared to the long-haul growth journey. So if you’ve ever wanted to try a bolder makeup routine, switch up your outfits, or just lean into a new aesthetic—this is such a good time.

Short hair makes everything feel intentional. Even a basic look can feel styled because your hair is already making a statement.

Watching it grow is its own kind of therapy

One of my favorite parts of a big chop journey is tracking growth. Not in a stressful way—more like a “wow, I’m really doing this” way.

I started taking quick photos every month. Same lighting when possible, same general angle. And when I look back from September to now (or any start date to now), it’s wild how much changes even when day-to-day feels slow.

Growth isn’t just length either. It’s density, softness, how your curls clump, how your hair responds to moisture, how fast wash day gets, how confident you feel walking out the door.

“But I know how to grow it back” is a powerful mindset

I’ve had moments where I missed my old length so much it actually hurt a little. Like, genuinely. Because hair can hold memories. It can hold versions of you.

But what calmed me down was reminding myself: I know how to grow it back.

And even if I don’t do everything perfectly, I know enough now to not stay stuck in damage cycles. That knowledge is freedom.

Also, I stopped treating the end goal like it had to be one specific length. Maybe I’ll grow it long again. Maybe I’ll fall in love with a bob. Maybe I’ll go even shorter and join the pixie gang for real. The point is: I’m choosing healthy hair and letting the style evolve with me.

If you’re considering the big chop, ask yourself this

Am I cutting from pressure or from clarity?
Pressure says, “I need to look like everyone else.” Clarity says, “I want a healthier start.”

Do I have patience for a journey?
Because it is a journey. Not only for your hair, but your self-esteem too.

Can I commit to learning my hair instead of fighting it?
Short hair will teach you quickly what works and what doesn’t. That’s not a bad thing—it’s actually a shortcut to understanding your texture.

I want to hear your big chop story

If you’ve big chopped, shaved your head, or you’re in that awkward in-between stage right now—tell me what surprised you the most. Was it the confidence boost? The emotional release? The styling learning curve? The way people reacted?

I’m still learning too, but one thing I know for sure: healthy hair is always a flex. And you deserve to feel good while you’re getting there.
